In 2006, I was working with\u00a0David Aylward<\/a> and the National Strategies firm. \u00a0He doesn\u2019t know this but there\u2019s a story (If you know me you know there\u2019s almost always a story.) \u00a0We had a client who wanted to reach parents. \u00a0David hired me to help and I had this big idea about making a parent website to promote them.<\/p>\n

David sort of said \u201cWhat about these blogs I keep hearing about? Would that be better?\u201d I knew so little about blogging that I had to go look it up online. I found a story about this little conference in San Jose called BlogHer<\/a>, meeting for only its second year. David and I convinced our client that I should attend this mysterious event and off I went along with fliers for our product and real curiosity about who these women were and what they were up to.

Here is what I received \u2013 from\u00a0BlogHer 2006<\/a>\u00a0and every one since:<\/p>\n

1. \u00a0 Access\u00a0to an entirely new world of remarkablewomen (and men too.) \u00a0 Including ( a little bit of a yearbook list)\u00a0Elisa Camahort Page<\/a> and Lisa Stone<\/a> and Jory Des Jardins<\/a> and Morra Aarons-Mele<\/a> and Cooper Munroe and Emily McKhann <\/a>and Liz Gumbinner<\/a> and Kristen Chase<\/a> and Asha Dornfest <\/a>and Jennifer Burdette Satterwhite<\/a> and Mary Spivey Tsao<\/a> and Danielle Wiley<\/a>and people I haven\u2019t mentioned here (Sorry \u2013 some I\u2019m notcompletely<\/em> sure who I met in 2006 and who later.) Feels like I\u2019ve known you all forever as well as\u00a0Sarah Granger<\/a> and Kelly Wickham <\/a>and\u00a0Jill Miller Zimon<\/a> and Joanne Bamberger <\/a>andStacey Ferguson<\/a>\u00a0and Cynthia Liu<\/a> and Anita Sarah Jackson<\/a>\u00a0andJenn Pozner<\/a> and \u00a0Cheryl Contee\u00a0<\/a>(and and and) \u00a0And that doesn\u2019t count the new (to me) folks like Sharon Hodor Greenthal<\/a>!.<\/p>\n

2. \u00a0An entirely new way to communicate and create.<\/p>\n

3. \u00a0 More fun than a barrel of groovy blogger women knew they could deliver. And \u2013 here\u2019s the reason I\u2019m writing this post at all:<\/p>\n

4. \u00a0 Another decade at least of being part of and participating in the new parts of the world \u2013 online and on screens, instead of watching from the bleachers.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lots of boomer women have joined me and the other early birds each year and I am certain they feel the same way (I\u2019ve asked several and besides they\u2019ve written about it<\/a>.) \u00a0At a time when many of our friends are settling into a more and more peer-centered life, we have the gift of having broadened, rather than narrowed, our world and hearing the voices of women we never would have known about, much less known for real. So David, thank you for the gift of my entry into this universe and for the imagination and vision that opened your mind to its possibilities. \u00a0It\u2019s a beautiful place to hang out and I\u2019ll always remember who sent me through the door.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
