{"id":3961,"date":"2016-02-26T16:13:54","date_gmt":"2016-02-26T23:13:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/?p=3961"},"modified":"2016-02-26T16:13:54","modified_gmt":"2016-02-26T23:13:54","slug":"our-visit-with-singapores-dark-side-and-our-own","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/2016\/02\/26\/our-visit-with-singapores-dark-side-and-our-own\/","title":{"rendered":"Our Visit with Singapore&#8217;s Dark Side &#8212; and Our Own"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Singapore-twilght-chinatown-e1456498365544.jpg?ssl=1\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3962\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-3962\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Singapore-twilght-chinatown.jpg?resize=660%2C495&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Singapore twilght chinatown\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nYou can see some of the contrast\u00a0here: \u00a0Chinese New Year decorations over Singapore&#8217;s old\u00a0Chinatown neighborhood, itself somewhat disheveled and worn down. \u00a0Beyond it, the grand skyscrapers of the new, planned, tightly governed \u00a0environment.<\/p>\n<p>Before the city-state\u00a0was refurbished and its rigid government emerged, Chinese immigrants came by the thousands to settle among &#8220;their own&#8221; and build new lives. \u00a0In a cruel similarity to the sweatshops and tenements that were the lot of the wave of Jewish immigrants in the late 19th and early 20th century, they lived in impossibly crowded quarters in Chinatown, huge families in one room. \u00a0Their stories were further colored by the fact that many were kidnapped upon arrival and sold into slavery or made to work for almost nothing. \u00a0Their average life expectancy: 35.<\/p>\n<p>And that was just the men. \u00a0Sex trafficking is, sadly, a timeless curse and so it was in Singapore. \u00a0Women were seized and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.journeys.com.sg\/singaporewalks\/tours_redlantern.asp\" target=\"_blank\">brought here\u00a0<\/a>to serve as sex workers from the beginning of Singapore&#8217;s rise. \u00a0In the streets of the city&#8217;s Chinatown, they lived and worked and often, we learned, lost their lives early, through murder or suicide, while still in their teens.<\/p>\n<p>In a peculiar set of contrasts, the tour we took tonight, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.journeys.com.sg\/singaporewalks\/tours_redlantern.asp\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Secrets of the Red Lantern,&#8221;<\/a> walked us through two eras of suffering: the <a href=\"http:\/\/chinatownheritagecentre.com.sg\/\" target=\"_blank\">Chinatown Heritage Center<\/a>\u00a0 with its recreated tenement, similar to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tenement.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lower East Side Tenement\u00a0Museum<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/geylangredlightdistrict.com\/singapore-brothels\/\" target=\"_blank\">Geylang<\/a>, one of Singapore&#8217;s sanctioned red light districts.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn&#8217;t much fun; most of what we learned was sad. \u00a0Not that there&#8217;s much unfamiliar about abused workers and sexually exploited women. \u00a0Even so, both of us felt left the tour sad and heavy and angry, not only about what we heard, which wasn&#8217;t SO different from the western history we know, but that we spent one of our three nights here learning about it. \u00a0This morning though, I&#8217;m glad we went.<\/p>\n<p>This is one of the richest populations in the world, and like most wealthy communities, it was built on the backs of the desperate. \u00a0Despite\u00a0its public righteousness, Singapore legalized\u00a0prostitution and established\u00a0red light districts to contain it. \u00a0With labor and with sex, as with so much else, things are as they have always been.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You can see some of the contrast\u00a0here: \u00a0Chinese New Year decorations over Singapore&#8217;s old\u00a0Chinatown neighborhood, itself somewhat disheveled and worn down. \u00a0Beyond it, the grand skyscrapers of the new, planned, tightly governed \u00a0environment.
