“I was raised to do one thing but I’ve got nothing to fight for.” — \u00a0Finn – a Storm Trooper*<\/em><\/p>\n

My sons are 40 and 36 and they’re going to\u00a0Star Wars <\/a>opening night\u00a0together. \u00a0It took some avid site refreshing and one wildly committed\u00a0wife as deputy but they have tickets. \u00a0I love knowing that they like each other enough to share this. The first films\u00a0hijacked our family – much to our delight.<\/p>\n

There was lots of stuff<\/em>, of course. \u00a0We had action figures <\/a>and Death Star Space Stations<\/a>, Landspeeders<\/a>,\u00a0Tie Fighters<\/a>, \u00a0Millennium Falcons<\/a>, Light Sabers<\/a>, Lego versions <\/a>\u00a0and about a billion little weapons<\/a> all over the floor of their room. \u00a0All the time. \u00a0It was wonderful watching the two of them\u00a0and their friends imagining all sorts of adventures as the toys carried them into battles\u00a0between good and evil.<\/p>\n

Once when he was around ten, I asked my older son, what he\u00a0really wanted to do when he was older. \u00a0He replied, with growing agitation, “I want…. \u00a0I want…. I want to fight The Empire! \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

And there it is. \u00a0Deep inside the battles and light shows and Yoda-isms is the simple truth that informs most wonderful stories: a battle fought for honor, justice, family, love, or even peace.<\/p>\n

Is it any\u00a0wonder why that nearly 40 years later, the fever has reemerged, the joy and anticipation\u00a0like new?<\/p>\n

It is with gratitude that\u00a0one watches a child find joy in a story or a song, from Little Bear to Harry Potter. \u00a0But Star Wars — well, that’s not just a wonderful tale, it’s the gift of a dream – something to fight for connected to the best parts of each of us, of hope, and courage and love. \u00a0I’m grateful that it exists and that my grown kids still love it and I’m really really grateful that the person each wants to revisit that world with is his very own brother.<\/p>\n
