\nLike most\u00a0of us, I don’t think I’ve felt like this since 9\/11, although Paris\u00a0may\u00a0feel scary in a different way\u00a0because the scope and savvy of ISIS makes Al Qaeda look primitive in comparison.<\/p>\n

I spend hours on the Web every day, and\u00a0probably understand the reach, creativity and strategic smarts of ISIS outreach more than most of my peers. \u00a0It’s kind of amazing that people committed to such a regressive lifestyle are so adept\u00a0at using\u00a0modern methods<\/a> to build it. \u00a0They’ve been using Twitter<\/a>, Whatsapp<\/a> and other basic tools for some time but even though\u00a0I raised two gamers,\u00a0it never occurred to me until I heard it this morning that online game consoles are great, almost invisible, ISIS communication tools.<\/a><\/p>\n

There have been hints though, in our popular culture. Portraits of these tactics have appeared\u00a0 in TV shows as disparate in audience as NCIS<\/a> and The Good Wife<\/a>: plots about the online\u00a0recruiting American teenagers for homegrown violence<\/a>\u00a0and about exploiting western commitment to privacy<\/a> and free speech and thought, as well as the seemingly insurmountable gap between the world that nurtures these terrorists and the world we have tried to create for our own kids.<\/p>\n

Of course, that dissonance means nothing if your goal is to return us all to\u00a0a particularly fierce, and very old, version of holiness. \u00a0It’s so sad to note, too, that our wonderful technology is once again taking us away from all we’d hope it would be.<\/p>\n
