{"id":3580,"date":"2015-11-10T18:00:54","date_gmt":"2015-11-11T01:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/?p=3580"},"modified":"2015-11-10T18:00:54","modified_gmt":"2015-11-11T01:00:54","slug":"50-jewish-stars-21-interesting-women","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/2015\/11\/10\/50-jewish-stars-21-interesting-women\/","title":{"rendered":"50 Jewish Stars; 21 Interesting Women"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_3581\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3581\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Forward-50.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3581\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Forward-50.jpg?resize=660%2C396&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"The Forward 50\" width=\"660\" height=\"396\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Forward-50.jpg?resize=1024%2C614&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Forward-50.jpg?resize=300%2C180&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Forward-50.jpg?w=1260&amp;ssl=1 1260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3581\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Forward 50<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Meet the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/forward.com\/series\/forward-50\/2015\/?attribution=home-series-icon-4\" target=\"_blank\">Forward 50<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0\u2013 fifty Jewish Americans designated worthy of special attention as 2015 draws to a close. \u00a0That \u201cForward\u201d in \u201cThe Forward 50?&#8221; \u00a0It\u2019s The <em>Jewish Daily<\/em> Forward. \u00a0A newspaper founded in 1897 as a Yiddish language publication, it has also\u00a0published in English for the past 25 years,\u00a0won a ton of awards, and at one time in the 1920\u2019s had a larger circulation than the New York Times!<\/p>\n<p>Every year, most likely as circulation-building clickbait, the paper publishes a list of fifty Jews who are &#8220;deeply, loudly and passionately embedded in some of the most pressing political and social issues in the nation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Not so unusual, but I was pleased to see that nearly half (21) were women so I decided see\u00a0who they are, and they&#8217;re pretty interesting and modern.<\/p>\n<p>Two of their &#8220;Top 5&#8221; are women, one an\u00a0academic, one a star: Princeton professor and newly minted MacArthur &#8220;genius&#8221;\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/forward.com\/series\/forward-50\/2015\/marina-rustow\/\">Marina Rustow<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; <\/strong>who is also the first Jewish Studies person to receive a MacArthur &#8212; and our own beloved\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/forward.com\/series\/forward-50\/2015\/amy-schumer\/\">Amy Schumer<\/a>. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Four of the six &#8220;Activists&#8221; are women:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/forward.com\/series\/forward-50\/2015\/ruby-sklar-and-rachel\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rachel Sklar and her daughter Ruby<\/a>,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/forward.com\/series\/forward-50\/2015\/emma-sulkowitcz\/\">Emma Sulkowitcz<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0who carried a mattress &#8211; <em>everywhere<\/em> &#8211; \u00a0through her last years at Columbia University to protest the school&#8217;s inaction in her rape allegations. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/forward.com\/series\/forward-50\/2015\/ruth-messinger\/\">Ruth Messinger<\/a>, <\/strong>long-time crusader and organizer, who in the 17 years she spent running the United Jewish Word Service, &#8220;created a uniquely Jewish way to promote economic and gender equality in the developed world&#8221; and street harassment activist\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/forward.com\/series\/forward-50\/2015\/shoshana-roberts\/\">Shoshana Roberts<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0.<\/p>\n<p>In general, this is a varied, original and exciting list. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/forward.com\/series\/forward-50\/2015\/\" target=\"_blank\">Twenty-one\u00a0of 50<\/a> isn&#8217;t perfect but what&#8217;s kind of cool is how many of these women are closer to the edge not just of Jewish culture but the culture of the US generally.
