This little fountain sits behind Napoleon’s “summer residence” in Elba, where he was exiled in disgrace after a horrific defeat\u00a0—\u00a0one Mark Knopfler<\/a> described in his beautiful Done With Bonaparte<\/a><\/em>. \u00a0Napoleon never lived here; this\u00a0house outside Portoferraio Italy was not his home but was to be a summer retreat. \u00a0He fled Elba before he ever spent a night there.<\/p>\n

The small\u00a0island \u00a0also includes several other beach\u00a0towns with lovely harbors. \u00a0There are also some lovely – and some weird,\u00a0—\u00a0sights. \u00a0I’ve added\u00a0a few\u00a0below.<\/p>\n

Right now it’s really late; I’ve shared some of Knopfler’s lyrics\u00a0from\u00a0his meditation on the suffering of Napoleon’s soldiers in the defeat that cost their leader his command and position, and cost them far more:<\/p>\n

Our dead are strewn a hundred leagues<\/em><\/div>\n

\n A little Corporal again<\/em>
