BlogHer has merged with SheKnows<\/a>, as Lisa Stone and and AdAge<\/a>\u00a0announced this morning. \u00a0Since 2006 the wonder that is BlogHer<\/a> has been a central part of my life. \u00a0On this NABLOPOMO day 3, here’s why*:<\/em><\/p>\n

In 2006, I was working with\u00a0David Aylward<\/a>\u00a0and the National Strategies firm. \u00a0He doesn’t know this but there’s a story (If you know me you know there’s almost always a story.) \u00a0We had a client who wanted to reach parents. \u00a0David hired me to help and I had this big idea about making a parent website to promote them. \u00a0Well.\u00a0David sort of said “What about these blogs I keep hearing about? Would that be better?” I knew so little about blogging that I had to go look it up online. I found a story about this little conference in San Jose called\u00a0BlogHer<\/a>, meeting for only its second year.\u00a0David and I convinced our client that I should attend this mysterious event and off I went along with fliers for our product and real curiosity about who these women were and what they were up to.<\/p>\n

Here is what I received – from\u00a0BlogHer 2006<\/a>\u00a0and every one since:<\/p>\n

1. \u00a0 Access\u00a0to an entirely new world of remarkable women (and men too.) \u00a0 Including ( a little bit of a yearbook list)\u00a0Elisa Camahort Page<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Lisa Stone<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Jory Des Jardins<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Morra Aarons-Mele<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Cooper Munroe and Emily McKhann\u00a0<\/a>and\u00a0Liz Gumbinner<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Kristen Chase<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Asha Dornfest\u00a0<\/a>and\u00a0Jennifer Burdette Satterwhite<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Mary Spivey Tsao<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Danielle Wiley<\/a>\u00a0and people I haven’t mentioned here (Sorry – some I’m not\u00a0completely<\/em>\u00a0sure who I met in 2006 and who later.) Feels like I’ve known you all forever as well as\u00a0Sarah Granger<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Kelly Wickham\u00a0<\/a>and\u00a0Jill Miller Zimon<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Joanne Bamberger\u00a0<\/a>and\u00a0Stacey Ferguson<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Cynthia Liu<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Anita Sarah Jackson<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Jenn Pozner<\/a>\u00a0and \u00a0Cheryl Contee\u00a0<\/a>(and and and) \u00a0And that doesn’t count the new (to me) folks like\u00a0Sharon Hodor Greenthal<\/a>!.<\/p>\n

2. \u00a0An entirely new way to communicate and create.<\/p>\n

3. \u00a0 More fun than a barrel of groovy blogger women knew they could deliver. And – here’s the reason I’m writing this post at all:<\/p>\n

4. \u00a0\u00a0Another decade at least of being part of and participating in the new parts of the world – online and on screens, instead of watching from the bleachers.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lots of boomer women have joined me and the other early birds each year and I am certain they feel the same way (I’ve asked several and\u00a0besides they’ve written about it<\/a>.) \u00a0At a time when many of our friends are settling into a more and more peer-centered life, we have the gift of having broadened, rather than narrowed, our world and hearing the voices of women we never would have known about, much less known for real. So David, thank you for the gift of my entry into this universe and for the imagination and vision that opened your mind to its possibilities. \u00a0It’s a beautiful place to hang out and I’ll always remember who sent me through the door.<\/p>\n
