Do We Care?   #MicroblogMonday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Apocalypse-road-sign-resized.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-2678\" alt=\"Apocalypse-road-sign-resized\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Apocalypse-road-sign-resized.jpg?w=660&#038;ssl=1\"   srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Apocalypse-road-sign-resized.jpg?w=443&amp;ssl=1 443w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Apocalypse-road-sign-resized.jpg?resize=300%2C180&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 443px) 100vw, 443px\" \/><\/a>I&#8217;ve spent most of my life thinking about disasters and potential apocalypses and injustice and misery: I&#8217;m a journalist, or at least I was, so I don&#8217;t get discouraged easily. \u00a0So far the world, or at least our country, has always seemed to right itself in the nick of time. \u00a0I seriously wonder if we can still do it though. \u00a0We all know why:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">A bitterly divided country<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Racism<\/p>\n<p>Institutional injustice<\/p>\n<p>The terrifying assault on women&#8217;s rights and well-being, here and elsewhere<\/p>\n<p>The decline of our public schools<\/p>\n<p>Climate change<\/p>\n<p>The rise of fundamentalism<\/p>\n<p>The coarsening of our culture<\/p>\n<p>The cost of a college education<\/p>\n<p>Ebola<\/p>\n<p>ISIS<\/p>\n<p>Hunger<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/136870\/measles-antivaxxers-outbreaks\/\" target=\"_blank\">Anti-Vaxx-ers <\/a>(seriously)<\/p>\n<p>Add your own here____________________<\/p>\n<p>Beneath those individual issues lies the biggest threat: what appears to be the larger change in our values. \u00a0As I watched <a href=\"www.pbs.org\/kenburns\/the-roosevelts\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Roosevelts<\/a>\u00a0and, strangely enough, re-watched\u00a0<a href=\"www.kingsspeech.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">The King&#8217;s Speech<\/a>, I wondered (not for the first time) where those sorts of world leaders (FDR, a president with political skills, toughness, vision and an understanding both of where the country was and where he needed to take it, Teddy Roosevelt who took on income inequality through trust busting and began what became the environmental movement (and yes he also started a couple of wars&#8230; or a reluctant King George IV, who not only held Britain together and committed under horrible circumstances but also <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_VI#Second_World_War\" target=\"_blank\">led by example<\/a>) are today, whether they could be elected or heeded &#8212; \u00a0whether they would even be willing to try. \u00a0Even more, I wondered if our country would accept them; whether we are still capable of selflessness or a sense of duty or a thoughtful response to a call to sacrifice. \u00a0I hope so.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve spent most of my life thinking about disasters and potential apocalypses and injustice and misery: I&#8217;m a journalist, or at least I was, so I don&#8217;t get discouraged easily. \u00a0So far the world, or at least our country, has always seemed to right itself in the nick of time. \u00a0I seriously wonder if we &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/2014\/10\/14\/do-we-americans-still-have-it-do-we-care-microblogmonday\/\" class=\"more-link\">Continue reading <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Do We Americans Still Have It?
