{"id":2425,"date":"2014-07-31T15:49:41","date_gmt":"2014-07-31T15:49:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/?p=2425"},"modified":"2014-08-04T05:47:40","modified_gmt":"2014-08-04T05:47:40","slug":"margot-adler-sang-at-my-wedding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/2014\/07\/31\/margot-adler-sang-at-my-wedding\/","title":{"rendered":"Margot Adler Sang at My Wedding"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_2429\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2429\" style=\"width: 645px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Margo-at-our-wedding3.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2429\" alt=\"Margo in the foreground; that's me in the back.\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Margo-at-our-wedding3.jpg?resize=645%2C485&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"645\" height=\"485\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Margo-at-our-wedding3.jpg?w=645&amp;ssl=1 645w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Margo-at-our-wedding3.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Margo-at-our-wedding3.jpg?resize=624%2C469&amp;ssl=1 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 645px) 100vw, 645px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2429\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Margo in the foreground; that&#8217;s me in the back.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It was 1971. \u00a0The song &#8211; no surprise to anyone who was young then, was\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.metrolyrics.com\/last-night-i-had-the-strangest-dream-lyrics-simon-and-garfunkel.html\">Last Night I Had the Strangest Dream<\/a>, Ed McCurdy&#8217;s anti-war anthem. \u00a0We knew we couldn&#8217;t get married in the middle of the war that had defined much of our lives without acknowledging it, and the song was the perfect way. \u00a0Margot was amazing, her voice clear and passionate; people even cried as we two 20-somethings stood, mid-ceremony, and Margot sang. \u00a0She had a great voice,\u00a0had actually been a music person forever, and attended the famed Music and Art High School in Manhattan.<\/p>\n<p>We met cute. \u00a0A friend brought her into the Senate Radio-TV Gallery, just off the press balcony overlooking the Senate. \u00a0Reporters wrote their spots there, and there was a small studio where Senators could come and make statements for the cameras. \u00a0I didn&#8217;t know Margot, but her Pacifica Radio friend knew she had a question that any pal of Margot&#8217;s would have loved.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Pacifica (the progressive, listener-supported NY-based FM radio station) wants to hire me to cover the White House. \u00a0I&#8217;ve just come back from Cuba where I was helping the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Venceremos_Brigade\">Venceremos Brigade<\/a>\u00a0harvest sugar cane. \u00a0Will that be a problem?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This was Richard Nixon&#8217;s White House she was asking about. \u00a0You can imagine my answer.<\/p>\n<p>It was the beginning of a beautiful friendship.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">From then on, until I left Washington with the man who is still my husband, our adventures were many, and varied and intense. \u00a0The moment that rises to the top though, is a small one, very\u00a0Margot &#8211; precise and painful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>We had seen <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0066011\/\">Love Story<\/a>, the shameless, sentimental, &#8220;Love means never having to say you&#8217;re sorry&#8221; Love Story. \u00a0(Yeah, I know, but everyone went \u2013 even politicos like us.)\u00a0 She was quite upset, more than I would have thought &#8211; and I never go by Mt.
