Madonna<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We learned a great deal about Benedictine Monks, monasteries, the politics of moving from the election of the abbot (chief of the Abbey) to empowering the local Duke to appoint him, (you can imagine where that led.)<\/p>\n<p>And then there was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=6&amp;ved=0CFkQFjAF&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.britannica.com%2FEBchecked%2Ftopic%2F219315%2FFrench-Revolution&amp;ei=rAduU73-HoPlOsiRgfAD&amp;usg=AFQjCNG_AfIfszGmhjwATBzoeDExQFB6Mw&amp;bvm=bv.66330100,d.ZWU\" target=\"_blank\">the French Revolution<\/a>. \u00a0To us, that means guillotines and The Terrors. \u00a0In fact, there was a clear political philosophy and plan that informed the cause before it got away from the thinkers.<\/p>\n<p>Some of France&#8217;s basic principles of governance were, in fact, established by the revolutionaries, who fanned out into the countryside to create more than 90 &#8220;departments&#8221; through which to govern. \u00a0Each was required to be no larger in circumference than the distance a horse could travel in one day. \u00a0This kept the people close to, and invested in, their government. \u00a0It also \u00a0provided the government with ample intelligence on neighborhood issues and plans.<\/p>\n<p>The churches also faced challenges. \u00a0 Each town had to choose: \u00a0They were permitted only ONE church since there was only ONE city hall. \u00a0It was unacceptable for the Church to overshadow the state by setting up small parallel governments in or sphere of influence.<span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>And then we went to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=8&amp;ved=0CG8QFjAH&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.normandie-tourisme.fr%2Farticles%2Fhonfleur-278-2.html&amp;ei=OQhuU8zsCozrOZjagfAB&amp;usg=AFQjCNGy9H5ngVZrSPj-too5QcwXcKJuew&amp;bvm=bv.66330100,d.ZWU\" target=\"_blank\">Honfleur<\/a>, one of only a few towns in France that suffered no bomb damage during WWII. \u00a0It&#8217;s had damage of a different kind, though &#8212; so many tourists &#8212; like Provincetown in August. \u00a0We were ready to be snooty about the entire experience and then we came upon her:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2215\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2215\" style=\"width: 299px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Ste-Teresa-stone-church-honfleur.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2215\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Ste-Teresa-stone-church-honfleur.jpg?resize=299%2C399&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Ste Teresa stone church honfleur\" width=\"299\" height=\"399\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Ste-Teresa-stone-church-honfleur.jpg?w=299&amp;ssl=1 299w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Ste-Teresa-stone-church-honfleur.jpg?resize=224%2C300&amp;ssl=1 224w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 299px) 100vw, 299px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2215\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sainte Th\u00e9r\u00e8sa de Lisieux in the Wood Church of Honfleur<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>She is Sainte Th\u00e9r\u00e8sa de Lisieux, a 20th Century girl who died of tuberculosis. \u00a0Her sister wrote a book about her and her good deeds and she was canonized during the papacy of John Paul II. \u00a0 This shrine is in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tripadvisor.com\/Attraction_Review-g187189-d196471-Reviews-Saint_Catherine_s_Church-Honfleur_Calvados_Basse_Normandie_Normandy.html\" target=\"_blank\">Wood Church of Ste.
