{"id":1750,"date":"2006-11-02T14:35:44","date_gmt":"2006-11-02T14:35:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/2006\/11\/02\/wonderful_willi\/"},"modified":"2014-08-04T05:07:22","modified_gmt":"2014-08-04T05:07:22","slug":"wonderful_willi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/2006\/11\/02\/wonderful_willi\/","title":{"rendered":"WONDERFUL WILLIAM STYRON"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onclick=\"window.open(this.href, '_blank', 'width=116,height=100,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0'); return false\" href=\"http:\/\/dontgelyet.typepad.com\/.shared\/image.html?\/photos\/uncategorized\/styron.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px 5px 5px 0px; float: left;\" title=\"Styron\" alt=\"Styron\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/dontgeltoosoon\/images\/styron.jpg?resize=100%2C86\" width=\"100\" height=\"86\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In 1968 I was a volunteer in the Eugene McCarthy anti-war presidential campaign.\u00a0 Most of the time I took care of the press, riding on the press bus and handling logistics for filing stories and getting to the plane on time.\u00a0 Frequently, when celebrities were campaigning with the Senator they&#8217;d ride for a while on the press bus, so I got to meet some pretty amazing people, from Robert Lowell to Tony Randall to William Styron, who died this week.<\/p>\n<p><a onclick=\"window.open(this.href, '_blank', 'width=75,height=111,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0'); return false\" href=\"http:\/\/dontgelyet.typepad.com\/.shared\/image.html?\/photos\/uncategorized\/nat_turner_1.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px 5px 5px 0px; float: left; width: 93px; height: 113px;\" title=\"Nat_turner_1\" alt=\"Nat_turner_1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/dontgeltoosoon\/images\/nat_turner_1.jpg?resize=93%2C113\" width=\"93\" height=\"113\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>I had just read <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Confessions_of_Nat_Turner_(1967)\">The Confessions of Nat Turner<\/a>, his 1967 Pulitzer Prize-winning book about a slave revolt in Virginia in 1831, which I had loved.\u00a0 I knew of his close friendship with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wnet\/americanmasters\/database\/baldwin_j.html\">James Baldwin<\/a>, whom I really admired, and imagined that the book was written partly as a cry for justice for his friend and other black Americans.
