{"id":1695,"date":"2007-03-07T23:59:00","date_gmt":"2007-03-07T23:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/2007\/03\/07\/blog_against_se\/"},"modified":"2007-03-07T23:59:00","modified_gmt":"2007-03-07T23:59:00","slug":"blog_against_se","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/2007\/03\/07\/blog_against_se\/","title":{"rendered":"BLOG AGAINST SEXISM DAY: CAN YOU BELIEVE WE STILL NEED TO DO THIS?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/photos\/uncategorized\/superwoman.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/photos\/uncategorized\/superwoman_2.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Superwoman_2\" height=\"117\" alt=\"Superwoman_2\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/dontgeltoosoon\/images\/superwoman_2.jpg?resize=125%2C117\" width=\"125\" border=\"0\" style=\"FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 5px 5px 0px\" \/><\/a> March 8 is Blog Against Sexism Day &#8211; and as I began thinking about what to write, this is what came out:<\/p>\n<p>Once I met Betty Friedan &#8211; actually more than once &#8211; but the first time was at the 1967 <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Student_Association\">National Student Association<\/a> convention.&nbsp; It was obviously a turbulent time: the Vietnam War was everyone&#8217;s obsession &#8211; at the conference and in the world outside; the Civil Rights movement was moving toward racial separation, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ramparts_(magazine)\">Ramparts Magazine<\/a> had just revealed that the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cia-on-campus.org\/nsa\/nsa2.html\">CIA had been funding NSA<\/a> and lots of other student activities.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 4pt; LINE-HEIGHT: 110%\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 4pt; LINE-HEIGHT: 110%\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 4pt; LINE-HEIGHT: 110%\"><span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 11pt; COLOR: black; LINE-HEIGHT: 110%; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial\"><span face=\"Arial\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/photos\/uncategorized\/betty_friedan_bw_3.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Betty_friedan_bw_3\" height=\"186\" alt=\"Betty_friedan_bw_3\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/dontgeltoosoon\/images\/betty_friedan_bw_3.jpg?resize=125%2C186\" width=\"125\" border=\"0\" style=\"FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 5px 5px 0px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/span><span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 11pt; COLOR: black; LINE-HEIGHT: 110%; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial\"><span face=\"Arial\"><span style=\"font-size: 0.8em;\">I wrote about this on the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.msmagazineblogs.com\/smealreport\/archives\/2006\/02\/remembrance_of.html\"><span style=\"font-size: 0.8em;\">Ms. website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 0.8em;\"> when Betty died, so I&#8217;ll just repeat it here: <em>She spoke about inequities in pay, power and sense of self between women and men. I was irritated. Didn&#8217;t she know there was a war going on? Didn&#8217;t she know how many kids went to bed hungry? Didn&#8217;t she know about racial injustice?<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 4pt; LINE-HEIGHT: 110%\"><span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 11pt; COLOR: black; LINE-HEIGHT: 110%; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial\"><span face=\"Arial\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 0.8em;\">During Q and A I asked her &quot;How can women worry about themselves when there is so much more abject misery in the world? &quot; I asked. She drew herself up as only she could, looked me square in the eye and said &quot;My dear, don&#8217;t hide behind the poor.&quot;<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 4pt; LINE-HEIGHT: 110%\"><span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 11pt; COLOR: black; LINE-HEIGHT: 110%; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial\"><span face=\"Arial\"><em><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 4pt; MARGIN: 0px 5px 5px 0px\" \/><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 0.8em;\"> She was right, of course.&nbsp; Over the years &#8212; I just realized that it&#8217;s <strong><em>40<\/em><\/strong> this year &#8212; we&#8217;ve struggled and grown.&nbsp; The consciousness raising groups of the 70s were just that: they genuinely raised our awareness of the vast disparity in pay, rights and attitude between women and men.&nbsp; The world today is unimaginably different.&nbsp; But not finished.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 4pt; LINE-HEIGHT: 110%\"><span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 11pt; COLOR: black; LINE-HEIGHT: 110%; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial\"><span face=\"Arial\"><span style=\"font-size: 0.8em;\">There&#8217;s a sad split between old school feminists like me and younger, equally committed women.&nbsp; I don&#8217;t feel it personally but see it as a real political loss &#8211; we should be working together and for many younger women the groups of my generation seem staid, old and disinterested in their younger sisters.&nbsp; If we&#8217;re fighting sexism we shouldn&#8217;t be fighting each other!&nbsp; <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 4pt; LINE-HEIGHT: 110%\"><span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 11pt; COLOR: black; LINE-HEIGHT: 110%; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial\"><span face=\"Arial\"><span style=\"font-size: 0.8em;\">Beyond that, pay equity is closer but not all the way there; many major businesses and executive jobs still sport major glass ceilings, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/beenthere.typepad.com\/been_there\/2006\/09\/maternal_profil_1.html\"><span style=\"font-size: 0.8em;\">working mothers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 0.8em;\"> at all levels still have real problems &#8211; more in the hourly kinds of work than white collar.&nbsp; Divorce, domestic abuse, child custody and support &#8212; all of these issues are still without resolution.&nbsp; And in many areas, like abortion and federal protection of rights, we&#8217;ve slid badly under the current administration.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 4pt; LINE-HEIGHT: 110%\"><span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 11pt; COLOR: black; LINE-HEIGHT: 110%; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial\"><span face=\"Arial\"><span style=\"font-size: 0.8em;\">What gives me hope though is to think of my sons and the sons of my friends, and of the young people who share our lives in our community.&nbsp; These men wouldn&#8217;t dream of assuming certain tasks belong to women; wouldn&#8217;t dream of treating a female colleague or employee with less than appropriate dignity and can&#8217;t imagine another way to live.&nbsp; Systemically we still have a lot to do, but I do think that as we move forward these sons of feminists, raised with respect to respect their moms and sisters, classmates and friends, will not only de-fang sexism but also provide shining examples of how much better life is without it.&nbsp;
