{"id":1492,"date":"2008-07-28T12:40:55","date_gmt":"2008-07-28T12:40:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/2008\/07\/28\/the-dark-knight\/"},"modified":"2008-07-28T12:40:55","modified_gmt":"2008-07-28T12:40:55","slug":"the-dark-knight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/2008\/07\/28\/the-dark-knight\/","title":{"rendered":"THE DARK KNIGHT, HARRY POTTER, LORD OF THE RINGS, DARK U.S. DAYS AND POLITICS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><object width=\"425\" height=\"344\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/6UBP2nXtRRo&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1\"><\/param><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\"><\/param><\/object><\/p>\n<p>I used to see Christ symbols everywhere.&nbsp; It drove my mother crazy; no matter what film or book, I&#8217;d find some kind of symbol in it.&nbsp; And Christ symbols were fashionable then (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ingmarbergmanfoundation.se\/\">Ingmar Bergman<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stranger_in_a_Strange_Land\">Robert S. Heinlein<\/a>.)&nbsp; So I guess it&#8217;s no surprise that I found implanted meaning, this time political messages, in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scholastic.com\/harrypotter\/books\/phoenix\/\">Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix&nbsp; <\/a>(the loss of Hogwarts students&#8217; freedom and rights to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dolores_Umbridge#Dolores_Umbridge\">Dolores Umbridge<\/a>) and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/features\/tolkien.html\">Lord of the Rings<\/a>&nbsp; &#8211; listen to this: <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0.8in 10pt;\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 9pt; line-height: 115%;\">&quot;It&#8217;s<br \/>\nlike in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of<br \/>\ndarkness and danger they were, and sometimes you didn&#8217;t want to know the end<br \/>\nbecause how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it<br \/>\nwas when so much bad had happened? But in the end it&#8217;s only a passing thing.<br \/>\nThe shadow even darkness must pass. A new day will come, and when the sun<br \/>\nshines it will shine out the clearer. Those are the stories that stayed with<br \/>\nyou. That really meant something. Even if you were too small to understand why,<br \/>\nbut I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. The folk in those stories<br \/>\nhad lots of chances of turning back only they didn&#8217;t. They kept going because<br \/>\nthey were holding on to something.&quot;<strong> &quot;What are we holding onto<br \/>\nSam?&quot; &quot;That theres some good in this world, Mr. Frodo, and it&#8217;s worth<br \/>\nfighting for&quot;-<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/features\/tolkien.html\">The<br \/>\nLord of The Ring<\/a>&#8211; The Two Towers<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: 9pt; line-height: 115%;\"><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Now <a href=\"http:\/\/thedarkknight.warnerbros.com\/\">The Dark Knight<\/a> joins my array of political films.&nbsp; &nbsp;Think about it.&nbsp; Irrational evil &#8212; the Joker (the late <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0005132\/bio\">Heath Ledger,<\/a> as good as the reviews but somehow a bit Al Franken-esque)&#8211; drives Gotham City to such anxiety that its citizens are willing to surrender freedom and privacy and even to turn on their Bat-benefactor, to return order to their streets.&nbsp; Sound familiar?&nbsp; Throughout the film members of the community at large, as well as Bruce Wayne\/Batman (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.seattleweekly.com\/2008-07-16\/film\/the-dark-knight-christian-bale-suits-up-against-heath-ledger\/\">Christian Bale<\/a>), his beloved Rachel Dawes (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment\/news\/celebrity\/la-et-performance17-2008jul17,0,5184362.story\">Maggie Gyllenhaal<\/a>,) DA Harvey Dent (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment\/news\/movies\/la-ca-echkart-2008may04,0,3210342.story\">Aaron Eckhart<\/a>) and even the sainted Lucius Fox (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tribute.ca\/people\/Morgan+Freeman\/1597\/16939\">Morgan Freeman<\/a>) face &#8212; and often fail &#8212; deep ethical temptations (including abusing prisoners &#8212; sound familiar?) &#8212; and, surprisingly, those who face the most horrendous choice are criminals and civilians whose behavior is far more laudable than that of any of us (including me) who know what&#8217;s been done in our name in Iraq and have mourned but not acted to stop it.<\/p>\n<p>[SEMI-SPOILER ALERT]&nbsp; This gigantic challenge, issued from the Joker himself, is a formidable and hopeful moment in the film.&nbsp; Many have written that the film is dark and without humor but I don&#8217;t think so.&nbsp; This scene, in particular &#8211; and I don&#8217;t want to be too much of a spoiler &#8212; seemed to me to be there to remind us that there is always the potential for good.&nbsp; Even so, the film is crammed with talk, as in Sam&#8217;s speech to Frodo, and especially from the wise Albert (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.michaelcaine.com\/\">Michael Caine<\/a>) of the pain and sacrifice required in the battle against the troubles ahead. <\/p>\n<p>Maybe it&#8217;s a reach, and I can hear your saying &quot;Hey, it&#8217;s ONLY a movie!&quot; but there you are.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I used to see Christ symbols everywhere.&nbsp; It drove my mother crazy; no matter what film or book, I&#8217;d find some kind of symbol in it.&nbsp; And Christ symbols were fashionable then (Ingmar Bergman, Robert S.
