The UK may in many ways be more angry than most, because they were sucked into the Iraq war too.&#0160; <\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 11px; font-family: Arial;\">But my son, the one who works in London and has been going back and forth for five years or more,reported that the day after the election it felt better to be American in Europe than it had in a long time. &#0160;Add that to what happened &#0160;<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/Pretty%20amazing%20if%20you%E2%80%99ve%20followed%20the%20disdain%20with%20which%20the%20U.S.%20and%20particularly%20George%20Bush,%20have%20been%20viewed%20here%20in%20Europe.%20The%20UK%20may%20in%20many%20ways%20be%20more%20angry%20than%20most,%20because%20they%20were%20sucked%20into%20the%20Iraq%20war%20too.%20My%20son,%20the%20one%20who%20works%20in%20London%20and%20has%20been%20going%20back%20and%20forth%20for%20five%20years%20or%20more,%20claims%20that%20the%20day%20after%20the%20election%20everyone%20seemed%20different,%20and%20it%20felt%20better%20to%20be%20American%20in%20Europe%20than%20it%20had%20in%20a%20long%20time.\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-size: 11px; font-family: Arial;\">when Obama went to Berlin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 11px; font-family: Arial;\">: the amazing reception arising, I believe, because he stands for the America that the rest of the world wants to know. &#0160;The America of promise and compassion and justice and hope.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 11px; font-family: Arial;\">Now the Times of London, one of the great London newspapers, has, in its first Timers Person of the Year \u2013 worldwide \u2013 chosen President-Elect Barack Obama. In <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesonline.co.uk\/tol\/comment\/leading_article\/article5398018.ece\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-size: 11px; font-family: Arial;\">their editorial,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11px; font-family: Arial;\"> they say:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"border: 2px solid #666666; padding: 10px; background-color: #cccccc;\">\n<p><span><span style=\"font-size: 11px; font-family: Arial;\">What, then, made Barack Obama\u2019s rise to the presidency so remarkable, such a landmark event, is not the fact of his improbability or of his extraordinary background. What made it landmark is the nature of those things. For unlike his predecessors, Mr Obama\u2019s improbability, Mr Obama&#39;s extraordinary background, is not just important to him and to the story of his personal triumph. It caps a period of incredible change in America and makes possible incredible change in the world. And it is this \u2013 and the way he won the presidency \u2013 that made him the obvious choice as <\/span><em><span style=\"font-size: 11px; font-family: Arial;\">The Times<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: 11px; font-family: Arial;\"> Person of 2008.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/.a\/6a00d8341f053253ef010536996202970b-pi\" style=\"float: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><\/span><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/.a\/6a00d8341f053253ef010536a1186c970c-pi\" style=\"float: left;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"London Obama books cropped\" class=\"at-xid-6a00d8341f053253ef010536a1186c970c selected \" src=\"http:\/\/cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/.a\/6a00d8341f053253ef010536a1186c970c-320wi\" style=\"margin: 0px 5px 5px 0px;\" \/><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 11px; font-family: &#39;Trebuchet MS&#39;;\"><br \/>\nOf course the next four years are pretty scary, and it&#39;s probably impossible for him to live up to all we hope for him, but at least, for now, we are once again members in good, or at least better, standing, in the world community.&#0160;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 11px; font-family: &#39;Trebuchet MS&#39;;\">There&#39;s more evidence. These are the best-sellers in <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.waterstones.com\/waterstonesweb\/home.do\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-size: 11px; font-family: &#39;Trebuchet MS&#39;;\">Waterston&#39;s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 11px; font-family: &#39;Trebuchet MS&#39;;\"> bookstore in <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chiswick\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-size: 11px; font-family: &#39;Trebuchet MS&#39;;\">Chiswick<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 11px; font-family: &#39;Trebuchet MS&#39;;\">. Number one and number four. &#0160;This will be a president the world <\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic; font-size: 11px; font-family: &#39;Trebuchet MS&#39;;\">wants<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11px; font-family: &#39;Trebuchet MS&#39;;\"> to know. &#0160;So while it&#39;s scary, it&#39;s also exciting: to have selected a leader who makes us proud, through a process that made us proud, to have elected an African American president for our country, which, with all its troubles, once again makes us proud too. &#0160;The Bush years broke more hearts than our own, and the world reaction to Obama, from the Berlin speech to the London Times to front pages and African murals and Sunday commentary from one end of the world to the other proves it.<\/span><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 11px; font-family: &#39;Trebuchet MS&#39;;\">We don&#39;t know what will come next; we don&#39;t know how we will respond to that which is asked of us &#8211; and much will be. &#0160;But we do know, I think, that we have chosen, as our leader, someone whose place in the world enhances that of our country, and of us, and begins to build the faith, and determination, that will take us where we need to go.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px; font-family: Arial;\"><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>First-ever Times of London Man of the Year. &#0160;This is pretty amazing if you\u2019ve followed the disdain with which the U.S., and particularly George Bush, have been viewed here in Europe.
