They rely heavily on food donations to distribute much needed<br \/>\nfood to struggling people.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/join.strength.org\/operationnkh\">Make a Donation.<\/a><\/strong> If you want to make a donation but can&#39;t make one through your cell phone, please consider making a donation online. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nA random survey suggest that many of us have found great ways to offer support on Monday, and our fellow bloggers have made it easy to find them.&#0160; Start with Blog Her&#39;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blogher.com\/5-ways-participate-mlk-day-service\" target=\"_blank\">Britt Bravo post that covers everything:<\/a> a myraid of volunteer match-up sites, ways to spread the word, reading material and more. &#0160; Lisa Sabater&#39;s&#0160; Culture Kitchen lists <a href=\"http:\/\/culturekitchen.com\/mole333\/blog\/january_19th_day_of_service_with_democrats_wo_0\">Democrats at Work resources<\/a> in several states including Florida, Virginia and Washington, and links s<a href=\"http:\/\/culturekitchen.com\/mole333\/blog\/january_19th_day_of_service_in_washington_dc\" target=\"_blank\">ome in Washington DC<\/a>,&#0160; too. Montgomery County?&#0160; Try <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aparentinsilverspring.com\/2009\/01\/family-friendly-inaugural-mlk-jr-events.html\" target=\"_blank\">A Parent in Silver Spring&#39;s list<\/a>. &#0160; If you haven&#39;t found a place near you, this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usaservice.org\/content\/home\/\" target=\"_blank\">USA Service site<\/a> will hook you up.&#0160; All you need is a zip code.&#0160; <\/p>\n<p>Hilltown Families, a group in Western Massachusetts, my old stomping grounds, l<a href=\"http:\/\/hilltownfamilies.wordpress.com\/2009\/01\/14\/mk\/\" target=\"_blank\">inks to local activities <\/a>and even has a video to get you going.&#0160; Moving from Granola gulch to the establishment,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.finanzen.net\/nachricht\/Citi_Calls_on_More_than_100_000_Employees_Across_the_Country_to_Answer_President_elect_Obama_s_Request_for_a_National_Day_Service_on_Martin_Luther_King_Jr_Day_833647\" target=\"_blank\"> Citi has urged its 100,000+ employees to take part<\/a>, and offers opportunities in many of its location cities.&#0160; Also nationally, Black Politics on the Web reports that <a href=\"http:\/\/blackpoliticsontheweb.com\/2009\/01\/16\/nine-greek-lettered-organizations-respond-to-president-elect-obamas-call-to-service-on-january-19\/\" target=\"_blank\">nine major African American sororities<\/a> (the divine nine) have joined together to answer the call. <\/p>\n<p>As I suspect is happening in many cities, Sioux Falls is holding a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.argusleader.com\/article\/20090116\/NEWS\/901160321\/1001\/rss01\" target=\"_blank\">major food drive<\/a>.&#0160; Springfield, MO is running <a href=\"http:\/\/lifeofjason.com\/2009\/01\/14\/national-day-of-service\/\" target=\"_blank\">a multi-park cleanup<\/a>.&#0160; Native American and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiancountrytoday.com\/opinion\/columnists\/37675544.html\" target=\"_blank\">Olympic Gold Medalist Billy Mills<\/a> urges &quot;<font size=\"2\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"> <em>As American Indians, we should join Americans from across the country in this call to service<\/em>.&quot; and goes on to mention several youth activities in &quot;Indian country&quot; where help is needed.<\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"2\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">If you&#39;re a loner, or just want to do something personal, Seth Godin (no surprise) provides <a href=\"http:\/\/sethgodin.typepad.com\/seths_blog\/2009\/01\/national-day-of.html\" target=\"_blank\">a list of things you can do,<\/a> from my own favorite:&#0160; &quot;<\/span><\/font>Read a copy of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Lorax-Classic-Seuss-Dr\/dp\/0394823370\">Lorax<\/a> to a child that&#39;s never heard it&quot; to lots of great ways to share technical knowledge.&#0160; One example:&#0160; &quot;<em>Find a tool that non-profits need online, and then organize some brilliant people to build it as an opensource utility<\/em>.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Lisa Catherine Harper, of <a href=\"http:\/\/genxgeno.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Generation X Raising Generation O<\/a> has a nice meditation on how to figure out what sort of service will have <a href=\"http:\/\/\">the most impact on younger children<\/a>.&#0160; So does <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thegreenparent.com\/2009\/01\/16\/are-you-on-for-mlk-day\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Green Parent.<\/a>&#0160; <a href=\"http:\/\/keepleftnyc.wordpress.com\/2009\/01\/14\/obamas-pre-inaugural-call-to-service-get-involved\/\" target=\"_blank\">Progressive News from the Big Apple <\/a>links to a directory of many NYC opportunities, some of which begin before the 19th.<\/p>\n<p>As I said, this is a random survey.&#0160;
