{"id":1271,"date":"2009-07-26T18:18:00","date_gmt":"2009-07-26T18:18:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/2009\/07\/26\/paris-is-a-moveable-feast-and-we-are-making-the-most-of-it\/"},"modified":"2014-03-16T01:05:21","modified_gmt":"2014-03-16T01:05:21","slug":"paris-is-a-moveable-feast-and-we-are-making-the-most-of-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/2009\/07\/26\/paris-is-a-moveable-feast-and-we-are-making-the-most-of-it\/","title":{"rendered":"Paris is a Movable Feast &#8211; and We Are Making the Most of It"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/.a\/6a00d8341f053253ef0115723180bb970b-pi\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"at-xid-6a00d8341f053253ef0115723180bb970b \" style=\"margin: 0px 5px 5px 0px;\" alt=\"Soon its gonna rain2\" src=\"http:\/\/cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/.a\/6a00d8341f053253ef0115723180bb970b-500wi\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/nobelprize.org\/nobel_prizes\/literature\/laureates\/1954\/hemingway-bio.html\"><br \/>Ernest Hemingway<\/a>\u00a0is pretty passe these days, but in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2006\/12\/12\/AR2006121201712.html\">his wonderful memoir<\/a>\u00a0of his time in Paris, he wrote something that returns to me every time I&#8217;m here &#8220;If you are lucky enough to have lived in Paris as a young man, then wherever you go for the rest of your life, it stays with you, for Paris is a movable feast.&#8221; \u00a0And so it is. \u00a0Right here it&#8217;s going to rain, and the sky is far more grey-blue forbidding than I could get the camera to record, and it&#8217;s around 4 PM and we&#8217;ve been walking since 10 AM this morning. \u00a0And we haven&#8217;t really\u00a0<em>done<\/em>\u00a0anything &#8211; not in the way tourists go into museums and enrich themselves. \u00a0For us these streets, and the Seine, and the beautiful old buildings and boulevards &#8211; well, they&#8217;re the richest of all.<\/p>\n<p><div><a href=\"http:\/\/cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/.a\/6a00d8341f053253ef0115713ce8cd970c-pi\"><span font-size: 12px; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS';\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"at-xid-6a00d8341f053253ef0115713ce8cd970c \" style=\"margin: 0px 5px 5px 0px;\" alt=\"Parisiens are readers\" src=\"http:\/\/cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/.a\/6a00d8341f053253ef0115713ce8cd970c-500wi\" \/><\/span><\/a><br \/>It&#8217;s pouring rain on the bookstores of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Boulevard_Saint-Michel\" target=\"_blank\">Boulevard St. Michel<\/a>\u00a0on the Left Bank near the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sorbonne\" target=\"_blank\">Sorbonne<\/a>,\u00a0but that doesn&#8217;t stop the book shoppers. Paris is a city of readers, one where great writers have been held as heroes and mourned by the city &#8211; and much of the entire nation when they died. There are many restaurants and cafes on the Left\u00a0Bank, which had been home not only to Hemingway and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.online-literature.com\/fitzgerald\/\" target=\"_blank\">Fitzgerald<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tenderbuttons.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gertrude Stein<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"ttp:\/\/www.literarytraveler.com\/literary_articles\/sylvia_beach.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Sylvia Beach<\/a>\u00a0but also to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.iep.utm.edu\/b\/beauvoir.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Simone de Beauvoir<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nobelprize.org\/nobel_prizes\/literature\/laureates\/1964\/sartre-bio.html\" target=\"_blank\">Jean Paul Sartre<\/a>\u00a0and so many others. They are crammed with people all the time &#8211; whether it&#8217;s the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lesdeuxmagots.fr\/histoire.php\" target=\"_blank\">Deux Magots<\/a>\u00a0or the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ila-chateau.com\/lipp\/\" target=\"_blank\">Brasserie Lipp<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.frommers.com\/destinations\/paris\/D51460.html\" target=\"_blank\">Cafe de Flore<\/a>\u00a0because these places have an enormous literary history and those who visit here know that these are the places to visit even if they&#8217;ve never read\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/biblio\/17-9780679724513-0\" target=\"_blank\">The Second Sex<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.time.com\/time\/2005\/100books\/0,24459,the_sun_also_rises,00.html\" target=\"_blank\">The Sun Also Rises<\/a>\u00a0or even\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.online-literature.com\/fitzgerald\/greatgatsby\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Great Gatsby<\/a>.<\/div>\n<p><div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12px; line-height: 14px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/.a\/6a00d8341f053253ef011571404d69970c-pi\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"at-xid-6a00d8341f053253ef011571404d69970c \" style=\"margin: 0px 5px 5px 0px;\" alt=\"A couple of troubadors taking break\" src=\"http:\/\/cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/.a\/6a00d8341f053253ef011571404d69970c-500wi\" \/><\/a> <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<p>Or maybe they just know, like these two troubadours, that Paris, when you&#8217;re young, (or, hopefully, any other age) is still a gift.
