{"id":1222,"date":"2010-03-14T00:03:49","date_gmt":"2010-03-14T00:03:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/2010\/03\/14\/what-is-it-about-women-who-blog-that-scares-so-many-people-even-other-women-even-the-new-york-times-once-again-this-tim\/"},"modified":"2014-03-15T20:25:01","modified_gmt":"2014-03-15T20:25:01","slug":"what-is-it-about-women-who-blog-that-scares-so-many-people-even-other-women-even-the-new-york-times-once-again-this-tim","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/2010\/03\/14\/what-is-it-about-women-who-blog-that-scares-so-many-people-even-other-women-even-the-new-york-times-once-again-this-tim\/","title":{"rendered":"Women Bloggers Are NOT Cute Little Girls: Tell the New York Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a onclick=\"window.open( this.href, '_blank', 'width=640,height=480,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0' ); return false\" href=\"http:\/\/cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/.a\/6a00d8341f053253ef01310f9b0f8c970c\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"asset asset-image at-xid-6a00d8341f053253ef01310f9b0f8c970c \" alt=\"BH Cool Moms 2\" src=\"http:\/\/cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/.a\/6a00d8341f053253ef01310f9b0f8c970c-320wi\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><p>What is it about women who blog that scares so many people &#8211; even other women &#8212;<br \/>\neven the New York Times? \u00a0Once again this time, they&#8217;ve decided to offer<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/03\/14\/fashion\/14moms.html?ref=fashion\"> an &#8220;analysis&#8221; or a &#8220;portrait&#8221; or an I don&#8217;t know what<\/a><br \/>\nabout bloggers who are women and moms. \u00a0And when they do, they write with<br \/>\na condescending, bemused attitude that is what I remember from the early days<br \/>\nof the women&#8217;s movement, when men would joke about our desire to open our own<br \/>\ndoors, earn our own livings, make our own decisions. \u00a0It was kind of cute<br \/>\nto want to be able to get credit cards without a husband&#8217;s permission, to cover<br \/>\na story without having to go up in the balcony, to keep our names when we got<br \/>\nmarried. \u00a0 Feminism was just so adorable.<\/p>\n<p><p>Now, we&#8217;re free on so many levels, and one manifestation of that freedom is the<br \/>\nvibrant world we&#8217;ve created online. \u00a0Sisterhoods that cross race and<br \/>\npolitics and religion and age as we share ideas and pain, joy and pride, birth<br \/>\nand loss and every other story that is part of living a life. \u00a0 There have<br \/>\nbeen a couple of wonderful responses to this irritating TIMES piece (and it&#8217;s<br \/>\nnot the first&#8230;) \u00a0One of my own favorites, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mom-101.com\/2010\/03\/honey-dont-bother-mommy-im-writing.htm\">Mom-101<\/a>,<br \/>\nwhose admirers are legion, wrote<\/p>\n<p><p>&#8220;&#8230;once you<br \/>\nget past the first half of the article, there&#8217;s actually some solid information<br \/>\nin there&#8230;.But I wish [all] that had been to focus of an article about my<br \/>\nfavorite blogging community that just made the front page of my favorite<br \/>\nsection of my favorite Sunday paper. \u00a0I wish it had opened with the yearning<br \/>\nof bloggers for the community to return to good writing, and the evidence that<br \/>\nin the end, that&#8217;s mostly what pays off&#8230;. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><p>Of course, there<br \/>\nare more. \u00a0My friend Danielle Wiley, known to many of her friends as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foodmomiac.com\/foodmomiac\/about.html\">Foodmomiac<\/a> but also an executive at Edelman PR, <a href=\"http:\/\"> has also weighed in<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I invite you to read the full piece and form your own opinions, but sentences like \u201cbringing<br \/>\ntogether participants for some real-time girly bonding\u201d might very well stop<br \/>\nyou in your tracks. As I write this, my husband (and fellow Edelman executive<br \/>\nMichael Wiley) is at SXSW. Would Mendelsohn classify that experience as macho<br \/>\nbonding? Or would she write that he is attending a conference for the purposes<br \/>\nof education and networking? Why do people, including Ms. Mendlesohn, continue<br \/>\nto refer to networking among women as girly bonding? I seriously doubt the<br \/>\nparticipants at Bloggy Boot Camp were wearing jammies and braiding each other\u2019s<br \/>\nhair.
