Wow."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/.a\/6a00d8341f053253ef01310fbc27b5970c\" onclick=\"window.open( this.href, &#39;_blank&#39;, &#39;width=640,height=480,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0&#39; ); return false\" style=\"float: left;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Sabbath-Manifesto-cell-phone-sleeping-bags-white-00351\" class=\"asset asset-image at-xid-6a00d8341f053253ef01310fbc27b5970c \" src=\"http:\/\/cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/.a\/6a00d8341f053253ef01310fbc27b5970c-320wi\" style=\"margin: 0px 5px 5px 0px;\" \/><\/a> Are you unplugged?&#0160; It&#39;s Friday morning and soon Shabbat will be here.&#0160; I&#39;ll <a href=\"http:\/\/dontgelyet.typepad.com\/dontgeltoosoon\/2007\/03\/oh_those_candle.html\" target=\"_blank\">light the candles <\/a>and we&#39;ll go to friends for dinner and tomorrow to services and to lunch (I&#39;m bringing part of it).&#0160; Later we&#39;re going to another home to be part of what they call a &quot;shabbat hangout&quot; where the kids all play and the parents (and their older friends, like us) talk, and study and enjoy the peace of 24 hours of an unplugged, non-electric, non-driving, non-cooking,&#0160; non-working life.*&#0160; <\/p>\n<p>We <a href=\"http:\/\/dontgelyet.typepad.com\/dontgeltoosoon\/2006\/10\/out_of_the_clos.html\" target=\"_blank\">started living this way five years ago<\/a>, as I&#39;ve often documented here (I dare you to read <a href=\"http:\/\/dontgelyet.typepad.com\/dontgeltoosoon\/2006\/10\/patti_smith_cbg.html\" target=\"_blank\">this one about observant Judaism and Patti Smith<\/a>), and now it seems that others &#8212; many of them cool hipster digital types, &#8212; are looking to do the same.&#0160; Take a look.<br \/>\n<object height=\"299\" width=\"370\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/LReU9FSeyzc&amp;rel=0&amp;color1=0xb1b1b1&amp;color2=0xcfcfcf&amp;hl=en_US&amp;feature=player_embedded&amp;fs=1\" \/><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowScriptAccess\" value=\"always\" \/><\/object>\n<\/p>\n<p>\nOver these years I&#39;ve struggled with<a href=\"http:\/\/dontgelyet.typepad.com\/dontgeltoosoon\/2006\/11\/is_this_kosher.html\"> keeping kosher<\/a>, with <a href=\"http:\/\/dontgelyet.typepad.com\/dontgeltoosoon\/2007\/11\/jerusalem-dia-3.html\" target=\"_blank\">the role of women<\/a>, and with much else.&#0160; But there are moments of such beauty <a href=\"http:\/\/dontgelyet.typepad.com\/dontgeltoosoon\/2007\/07\/rebirth-of-wond.html\" target=\"_blank\">and meaning<\/a> that I find myself<a href=\"http:\/\/dontgelyet.typepad.com\/dontgeltoosoon\/2007\/04\/well_its_finall.html\" target=\"_blank\"> spinning<\/a> &#8211; knowing why I&#39;m here and wondering at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>I&#39;ve always been Progressive; worked in the <a href=\"http:\/\/dontgelyet.typepad.com\/dontgeltoosoon\/2007\/10\/one-two-three-f.html\" target=\"_blank\">anti-war movement<\/a> and the McCarthy campaign &#8211; and <a href=\"http:\/\/dontgelyet.typepad.com\/dontgeltoosoon\/2008\/01\/new-hampshire-p.html\">was in Chicago at the 1968 convention<\/a>, and when I first found observant Judaism and Shabbat, it felt counterintuitive.&#0160; Too many rules.&#0160; Sometimes it still does.<\/p>\n<p>But the reason why Unplugged is so great is that when you start, you think Shabbat will be what you hate.&#0160; No more errands or Saturday manicures or movies.&#0160; No phone calls or emails or web wandering.&#0160; <\/p>\n<p>And then you unplug.&#0160; And even if &#8211; as I suspect will be true for many -&#0160; you don&#39;t go the way we went and adopt (almost) the entire package, you find the peace of what Josh Foer, in the video, calls this &quot;ancient&quot; idea, and are grateful for it.&#0160; And for the people around you &#8212; IRL &#8212; close, and easy and at peace.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>*OK I admit it.&#0160; I&#39;m really glad the health care vote is on Sunday; if it had been on Saturday it would have been a real pain.<\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Are you unplugged?&#0160; It&#39;s Friday morning and soon Shabbat will be here.&#0160; I&#39;ll light the candles and we&#39;ll go to friends for dinner and tomorrow to services and to lunch (I&#39;m bringing part of it).&#0160; Later we&#39;re going to another home to be part of what they call a &quot;shabbat hangout&quot; where the kids all &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/cynthiasamuels.com\/blog\/2010\/03\/19\/are-you-unplugged-its-friday-morning-and-soon-shabbat-will-be-here-ill-light-the-candles-and-go-to-dear-friends-for-dinner\/\" class=\"more-link\">Continue reading <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Unplugged for Shabbat: Something the &#8220;Cool&#8221; People Want Too.
